When to Slow Down

90-120 WPM: Use slower pacing for complex topics, emphasis, emotional moments, or accessibility. Slower pacing helps listeners process difficult information.

When to Speed Up

180-210 WPM: Use faster pacing for energetic segments or less crucial information. Higher energy segments benefit from increased pace to maintain engagement.

The Power of Pauses

Strategic pauses enhance your podcast by giving listeners time to process information and creating emphasis at key moments. Different pause types serve specific purposes:

• Sense Pauses (0.5-1 second): Use between ideas within sentences, similar to commas in writing. These brief pauses help group words into digestible segments for listeners.
• Transition Pauses (1-2 seconds): Use between complete thoughts, equivalent to periods in text. These pauses prevent overwhelming listeners with run-on speech.
• Emphasis Pauses (1-2 seconds): Create impact around key points and maintain dynamic delivery. These pauses highlight important information and prevent monotonous presentation.
• Dramatic Pauses (3-5 seconds): Build anticipation before revealing important information. For example, “Do you know what happened next?” followed by silence creates tension and engagement.
